The NotLimited redesign is underway as of Spring 2010, and it is long overdue. Our previous 2000 design had begun to make our clients cringe, and a thousand blessings on their heads for sticking with us. Our new, understated ID and restrained color palette serve as backdrop for samples of our work that we've highlighted inside of Flash slideshows at the top of every page. The thematic imagery isn't essential to the page content (hence the Flash), but we feel it underscores our story. Our next phase of design will entail the creation of pure HTML/DOM (document object model) slideshows for those who access our site from iPhones and iPads. They're still getting the first static image from each slideshow, but we'd like them to have the full experience.
We've programmed the site for extensibility, to standards, and in validating HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. The development of HTML5 and its standards has made us more excited about code than we've been in many years, and we're looking forward to revising the code as this new language and its protocols grow.
For our new brand and simple navigation system (and all of the site headers, if you have the font loaded), we chose Americana BT. There's a free download at FontZone, in case you'd like to install it on your own computer. We like its gravity at all weights and think it works harmoniously with our chosen body font, Geneva, which pleases our Mac hearts.
The biggest change in the architecture of the site is that we were able to address the unwieldiness of our portfolio. We've streamlined the growing body of samples of our work onto a single what we do page and created JavaScript tooltips and overlays for access to descriptions and enlargements. The JavaScript page overlays containing enlargements and case descriptions are pulled in as SSI (server side include) pages which are fully accessible, though not as attractive as they could be with JavaScript enabled. Though the page takes a bit longer to load (the tooltips are part of the page DOM and so, again, fully accessible), our clients are less confused about where to find the kind of examples of our work they're seeking, and assure us that it's well worth the wait.
